The Protagonist
|
Defining the Protagonist and Antagonist of Frankenstein is not an easy task, both Victor and The Being are very complex characters neither is completely heroic nor completely villainous. However the story mainly revolves around Victor's character, thus making him the protagonist of the novel. Victor as the Protagonist is unique, he creates his own antagonist via his thirst for the knowledge of life (his tragic flaw), plus The Being's constant attempts at causing pain to Victor solidify him as the Protagonist to his creations efforts. The Being not only affects the outer forces pushing Victor to his limit The Being also affects Victors psyche, his paranoia and obsession. Victor's actions though flawed all have positive intentions, he wants to know how to create life so he may be able to prevent death like his mothers, he seeks to destroy his creation because it poses a threat to the already short lives of humankind, and finally when Victor is forced to make another monster he refuses so that humanity is not threaten to be overthrown by the stronger and more intelligent beings he created. Between Victor's connection with the audience and his actions lead to him being labels the hero of the novel.
